Exam Advice
Going through my exams was probably one of my hardest times for both GCSE and A-Level's but I just had to keep telling myself it would be worth it and that everyone else is going through the exact same thing. You have to remember you are not doing this on your own.
There are so many things that got me through my exams, from working hard, revising, going to revision sessions, keeping my attendance as high as possible but the most useful and effective tool was talking! I spoke to everyone and anyone about my exams- you'd be surprised by who would listen. Speak to your friends in your class, they might be able to understand something that you are not sure of, speak to your parents/carers/siblings about exam season and how you are feeling rather than a particular exam because letting people know how you feel is key! Talk to your teachers, I found that talking to my teachers was what really got me through exam season an especially the run to up those all important dates. Your teachers are the ones who can help you with content and exam technique as well as giving you the kick up the bum you need- trust me I know! The amount of time I needed a good talking to is unreal, but talking really made me feel like I knew what I was doing and gave me the last boost before heading the exam hall.
It is so important not to leave things till last minute, start your revision before you are told to, this is the perfect way to get all the content from all your subjects into your head. I remember feeling so overwhelmed with things to know that I started to write things down that I thought were important after each of my lessons as a way of getting a head with my revision. This mean that when it came down to the hard work and busy exam season that I was one step ahead and was able to revisit the key point I'd noted earlier and put them into mind maps and lists. Try to figure out your revision technique as early as possible, this will make your life so much easier.
One of the most important pieces of advice I ever got was don't revise the morning of your exam, this is because chances are you will fine something you have forgotten about and then get into a massive panic and hissy fit over trying to quickly find out what is it, which then puts all that well revised knowledge to the back of your head and you'll probably say 'I know this but I cant remember what it means' in the middle of the exam! This happened to me far to often when doing my GCSE's but managed to turn it around for my A-Levels- revision the night before is the last time I would try to cram in even more information! If you feel like you are unsure of something don't panic you cant know everything in detail you will be fine. Also if you are a little worried, see if your teacher is available before your exam for one last kick up the bum and motivation to do it. IT WILL BE FINE!
If you have worked hard for your exam know that if you do your best everyone will always be proud of you, not matter how you feel when you come out of the exam hall whether you knew all the answers, felt like it went ok, didn't know the answer to the long question, etc. as long as you gave it a go people will be proud of the effort you have made. It is so important to believe in yourself and if you feel like it could have gone better don't worry, it could be miles better than you thought. I convinced myself I'd failed some of my exams I really struggled on some of the long answer questions, but because of the hard work I put in I clearly knew more than I thought I did and you probably do too! DON'T PANIC!!! also I would avoid talking about the answers with your classmates as it can spook you when you have written something completely different to everyone else, even though its not always a bad thing.
Finally be prepared. Make sure you have all the correct equipment, black pens, pencils, rulers HIGHLIGHTERS, rubbers, calculators, maths sets, everything you need because do you really want to be the person who has to put up their hand and ask for things.... it will probably make you more nervous!
When you go into your exam take a deep breath sing your favourite song (IN YOUR HEAD!) and don't panic. Keep your eye on the clock and make sure you leave yourself plenty of time.
I hope your exams season is made a little easier by some of my tips from my exam time!
